Battery Distribution Overhaul
Re-engineering and re-wiring of the DC battery distribution system for a customer's entire 51' Atlantic Yacht
- This is what the battery box looked like when we showed up. There was a combination of 6 and 12 volt batteries. We installed all 12 volt batteries. There's also a bunch of wires that are not fused which is a major fire hazard.
- This picture shows the existing battery switches adjacent to the battery box. In between the port and generator battery switch is a battery combiner which we removed since we installed all 12 volt batteries and it was no longer needed.
- This is the inverter/charger before we re-cabled the DC portion of the system.
- This is a shot below the Bulkhead behind the battery box which shows more wires that are not fused, the main battery solenoid which was too small and the DC shunt for the old DC monitoring system which we removed per the customer's request.
- This picture shows the battery cables connected to the back of the switch panel with welding style cables that are not approved for the marine environment.
- We removed the battery box and disconnected the cables but here's a few shots of what the wiring looked like before we re-wired everything. Keep in mind, we were coming in behind 30 years worth of several different people working on this boat.
- This is the old battery charger which was not compatible with new AGM batteries. So it was out with the old and in with the new!!
- Here are the new 12 volt AGM batteries and new cables.
- Just in case you forgot what the original setup looked like, here's a comparison picture.
- Here's another shot where you can see the wall behind the battery box.
- Here's a shot of the back of the battery switches with all new type 3 tin coated marine grade wire. They also have red colored heat shrink lined with epoxy so when heated it creates a waterproof protection. The terminals are tin coated as well.
- Another before and after picture.
- We fabricated a piece of pressure treated wood to hold the new battery switches.
- Here's a picture of the inverter re-wired.
- Inverter before and after.
- This picture shows the main cables secured with stainless steel clamps.
- Here's the battery charger with all new cables.
- Here's a few shots showing how the new cables are neatly secured with stainless steel clamps all throughout.
- We fabricated a custom wooden bezel to house a remote panel for the battery charger that we installed.
